ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management
The objective of the ISO 45001 requirements is to establish and manage a healthy and safe working environment by eliminating or minimizing occupational health and safety risks within the organization in light of applicable legal regulations related to occupational health and safety. ISO 45001 is an international standard that is also compatible with quality and environmental standards.
The expectations of customers and consumers from the organizations from which they purchase products and services are steadily increasing. Today, it is no longer sufficient to provide only high-quality products or services; organizations are also expected to fulfill their social responsibilities. These expectations have caused traditional definitions of “quality” to lose their validity. As a result, references to occupational health and safety have been incorporated into these definitions, and the concept of quality has been expanded with the inclusion of social responsibilities. Today, when referring to “quality,” the extent to which organizations comply with occupational health and safety legislation, whether they provide a safe and healthy working environment for relevant stakeholders, and whether they continuously improve this environment are also questioned.
ISO 45001 is an effective tool that can be applied to organizations of all sizes, sectors, and activities, enabling occupational health and safety practices to be addressed systematically in alignment with the organization’s overall strategies and resolved within the framework of a continuous improvement approach. Rather than focusing on the safety of products and services, this standard is a system that prioritizes the health and safety of employees. It enables the establishment of a management system in which occupational health and safety risks are identified, analyzed, and reduced to a minimum through preventive measures; compliance with legal requirements is ensured; occupational health and safety objectives are defined; and practices are implemented to achieve these objectives.
Through this system, employees become part of an organization that is prepared for emergencies, monitors occupational health and safety performance, uses monitoring results to initiate improvement activities, audits its operations, reviews its practices, and documents its processes—thereby placing the necessary importance on occupational health and safety activities.
